SEEKING MAVIS BEACON

Typing on a keyboard in the 21st century seems to come as naturally as speaking and breathing, but in the late 80’s and early 90’s, one woman was responsible for teaching thousands of people around the world how to type — Mavis Beacon. In this whimsical and awe-inspiring journey, two young Black women employ themselves to investigate and document the mystery and legacy of Mavis Beacon, who seemingly fell off the face of the Earth. Director Jazmin Jones and producer Olivia McKayla Ross are determined to prove that Mavis was more than just a household computer program — but instead one of the most influential Black figures in technology.

In pursuing a Don Quixote-like goal, they uncover surprising details along the way about subjects that obsess them. As investigators, they are tenacious and relentless; as filmmakers they are exciting and determined.” —Murtada Elfadl, Variety

“In SEEKING MAVIS BEACON, the search for heroes, even where none technically exist, is a heroic act… We may or may not find Mavis Beacon but we find two wonderful souls in Jones and Ross, so this journey is more than just worthwhile. It’s powerful and it’s a joy.” —William Bibbiani, The Wrap

“One of the most interesting and thoughtful docs you’ll likely see all year…. The experience of watching Jones and Ross grow and change as artists and people throughout the investigation is worth the price of admission alone.” —Charles Barfield, Playlist
