Part of 1999
Comedy greats Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy team up for a surprisingly sharp satire about the entertainment industry in this Martin-penned romp about Hollywood’s least successful director who casts action superstar Kit Ramsey (Murphy) in his ultra low-budget film. Unable to sign Ramsey to the project through traditional channels, Bowfinger (Martin) decides to shoot the film around the unwitting, highly paranoid actor. With the help of Kit’s eager and nerdy brother Jiff (Murphy), an ambitious, fresh–off-the-bus actress (Heather Graham), and an over-the-hill diva (Christine Baranski), Bowfinger sets out to trick Kit into the performance of a lifetime in this hilarious celebration of no-budget genre filmmaking.
“A terrifically witty movie that skewers all the right targets. It's self-referential and geared toward movie buffs, but it's not so insular that you need an in-depth knowledge of the industry to get the jokes.” —Chuck Klosterman, Akron Beacon-Journal “Cinematic cotton candy.” —Ed Johnson-Ott, NUVO Newsweekly “Slyly and outrageously funny, by turns edgy and sweet.” —MaryAnn Johanson, The Flick Filosopher
