Part of Shocktober and Music City Mondays
In 1979, Jimmy Bones (Snoop Dogg) is the pulsing heart of his neighborhood — serving as its vigilant protector — until he is betrayed and brutally murdered. Twenty-two years later, Jimmy returns from the grave to avenge his death and seek retribution for his community which has fallen to ruin in the wake of his demise.
Despite vapid box-office success, the reputation of BONES — much like its protagonist — arose from its shadowy depths reincarnated as a cult classic horror film and a respectable nod to the Blaxploitation genre. While craftily veiled as a supernatural slasher — BONES manages to be a thoughtful commentary on corruption, drug abuse and crime in neglected urban neighborhoods. Adorned with notable performances from Pam Grier, Khalil Kain, and Bianca Lawson under the award-winning direction of Ernest Dickerson, BONES remains an essential fixture in the Black cinema landscape.
“A magnificent work of operatic cinemascope splatter.” —Jason Shawhan, Nashville Scene “With his smooth-as-smoke voice and street-strutting panache, Dogg has the makings of a genuinely great actor. When he's on screen the film crackles, and even when he's not it's a trippy, funhouse ride.” —Marc Savlov, Austin Chronicle
