ALMOST FAMOUS

Part of Staff Picks and programmed by Carly, who says: “ALMOST FAMOUS is one of my top three films of all time. Growing up in a house that listened to jazz, classical, world, and ‘80s pop, this film opened my eyes up to the greatness that is ‘70s rock. This stellar coming-of-age story is exactly what you want from a Cameron Crowe film: incredible music, quote-worthy dialogue, and the ungettable love interest.”

Widowed mother Elaine’s ‘sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll’ nightmares alienate her children, rebellious Anita and impressionable William. Stifled by her rules, Anita leaves home and gives her records to William who embarks on a love affair with music. The 15-year-old eventually seeks out Creem magazine’s renegade editor Lester Bangs who takes the teenager under his wing as William begins writing album reviews. On assignment to cover a big-name headliner, he meets and falls for charismatic ‘band aid’ Penny Lane who connects him with up-and-coming group Stillwater. The band warms to the earnest reporter. and William’s coverage attracts the attention of Rolling Stone editor Ben Fong-Torres who assigns him to cover Stillwater on tour. William quickly grows up with the band while on the road, cementing his love affair and commitment to music.

“[Director Cameron] Crowe takes the same pains to dig out the truth in these characters as he does with the music. The fine vintage soundtrack is complemented by original songs...written by Crowe and his wife, Nancy Wilson of Heart.” Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

“Crowe’s lovingly detailed recreation of ’70s America is genuine and never caricatured…ALMOST FAMOUS never loses its charm.” Fiona Villella, Senses of Cinema
