Opening Thu, Dec 5, QUEER from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino’s (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME) and starring Daniel Craig. (At Thu’s 9pm screening, senior film critic for the @nashvillesceen Jason Shawhan introduces.)

It takes risk to translate the work of William S. Burroughs for the screen, but Guadagnino’s spin on the Beat legend’s autobiographical novel matches its source material in vulnerability and taboo-smashing adventurousness. About Craig’s starring role, @slashfilm writes: “Downright sensational in what proves to be a transformative role, initially playing on our expectations of his world-famous James Bond performance before gleefully tearing those assumptions apart over the course of its 135-minute runtime.”

@indiewire called FLOW: “One of the most moving animated films in recent memory, and, beyond that, groundbreaking too…. It’s not just a supreme example of a movie kids will love that adults will too. “Beautifully threads the line between the real and the surreal… There is so much beauty in BIRD, both within the relationships unraveling onscreen and on the screen itself.” —@rafiews @ThePlaylistNews

Opening this Fri, Nov 22 — BIRD, the latest film from renowned English filmmaker Andrea Arnold (FISH TANK, AMERICAN HONEY) — is a compelling, ultimately joyous story that tackles themes of identity, sexism, loneliness and class struggle. The director’s empathy and skill at showing us beauty despite dire circumstances elevates BIRD beyond its roots. Add to that a crystalline thread of magic realism — and the result is an ode to the wondrous transition from childhood to adolescence. (Tickets at link in bio, or bit.ly/Belcourt-BIRD)

“It is triumphant, jarring and pulls its audience into an intimate storyline that demands to be witnessed…. The 1996 newly restored film, feels fresh and revitalizing as it molds generational victory through its thoughtful storyline and immaculate casting.” —Niani Scott, rogerebert.com

Bridgett M. Davis’s NAKED ACTS — this Thu, Nov 21 at 8pm + Sun, Nov 24 at 5:10pm. Without finding a receptive distributor when she made the film in the ‘90s, Davis decided to take things into her own hands — distributing and promoting it herself. NAKED ACTS enjoyed relative success in the alternative festival and theatrical circuit, but remains one of the criminally under-seen “most influential Black films.”

NAKED ACTS has been digitally restored and remastered by Lightbox Film Center in collaboration with Milestone Films. This 2023 restoration is from the 16mm a/b rolls preserved at the Indiana University Black Film Center & Archive. Restoration and release with creative consultation by Maya Cade, creator of the Black Film Archive.

This Mon, Nov 18 at 8pm, THE WORLD ACCORDING TO ALLEE WILLIS — described as “the most interesting woman you’ve never heard of” (@washingtonpost). Tickets at link in bio, or bit.ly/ALLEE-WILLIS. (Part of #MusicCityMondays.)

One look at award-winning songwriter and artist Allee Willis and you see someone unafraid to be themselves. Best known for writing the “Friends” theme song, the Earth Wind & Fire mega-hit “September” and the musical “The Color Purple,” Willis began filming her life as a kid in 1950s Detroit and never stopped. Dressed in a cacophony of prints and colors, with her signature asymmetrical haircut and famed parties at her real-life Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, Allee didn’t waste any opportunity to tell you what she was about. But privately, Allee struggled with not fitting established gender and sexual norms. She buried herself in her work, until true love manifested her ultimate masterpiece — self-acceptance.

“[Sergei] Parajanov has a genuine gift. He has the kind of heedless energy you glimpse in some of the early work of Martin Scorsese, pounding camerawork so filled with itself it can hardly contain the story.” — #RogerEbert @chicagosuntimes

Repost from @belcourtmidnights

Now that the madness that is October has come to a close, we here at Belcourt Midnights just wanted to take a second to send a huge thanks to our incredible staff. Between 12HoT and Rocky, October is chock full of weird hours, big crowds (seen here), and tons of clean up. We’re so lucky to have an amazing crew of folks who shoulder that insane schedule, sweep up what has to be a metric ton of popcorn, and keep serving you with a smile to ensure you have a great time at the movies. The quality, enthusiasm, dedication, and knowledge of our front of house crew is the best in the biz. They even give excellent film intros from time to time!
It also requires a lot of from our expert crew of projectionists who roll with whatever crazy ideas we throw out, and they always deliver such a beautiful and seamless viewing experience, even when it’s 2am and they’ve worked 4 late nights in a row. A lot of curveballs get thrown their way, from tech issues to “hey can you run this trailer I forgot to send to you until the last minute?” (yeah, my bad), and they make sure that you all are none the wiser.
So, if you’ve read all this and consistently have a good time thanks to these wonderful folks, the next time you’re in, please consider tossing a little extra in the tip bucket to show how much you appreciate them. They’re entirely the reason we’re able to do what we do. See ya at the movies!
