Double Feature: WAYNE’S WORLD + WAYNE’S WORLD 2

Part of SNL Cinematic Universe and Music City Mondays

Loveable party-time slackers Wayne and Garth have an excellent midwestern public access cable show, and keeping it going takes some doing! We’re closing out this whole shebang with a double feature of totally mental spew. We’re not worthy!

WAYNE’S WORLD
Dir. Penelope Spheeris | USA | 1992 | 94 min. | PG-13 | 4K DCP

Loveable slackers Wayne and Garth (Mike Myers, Dana Carvey) struggle to promote their quirky midwestern public access cable show Wayne’s World. They encounter slick producer Benjamin Oliver (Rob Lowe) and accept his offer to transplant their little show from public access oblivion to the fertile fields of lucrative commercial television. What should be their ticket to prime time instead becomes a wacky battle to save their show — and Wayne’s babelicious girlfriend — from ruinous exploitation. Based on the famous SNL sketch, produced by Lorne Michaels, written by team SNL writers Bonnie and Terry Turner (see also: CONEHEADS, TOMMY BOY), and directed by friend of the Belcourt, Penelope Spheeris. Featuring cameos by Chris Farley, SNL writer Brian Doyle-Murray, Alice Cooper and Meat Loaf.

WAYNE’S WORLD 2
Dir. Stephen Surjik | USA | 1993 | 95 min. | PG-13 | 4K DCP

On the strength of the staggering success of WAYNE’S WORLD, this sequel arrived only one year later — now out of the basement and hosting their successful TV show from an abandoned doll factory in Wayne’s new hometown of Aurora, IL. Wayne’s girlfriend, up-and-coming rock star Cassandra (Tia Carrere), is enjoying a career boost thanks to her new manager Bobby (Christopher Walker), but Garth thinks that Bobby is more interested in her than her place on the charts. Meanwhile, Wayne is visited in a dream by the late Jim Morrison (Michael A. Nickles), who convinces him to promote a massive rock festival (“Waynestock”), featuring Aerosmith as headliners. Garth, on the other hand, is getting it on with a femme fatale (Kim Basinger) with a hidden agenda. Fellow SNL cast Chris Farley and Harry Shearer make appearances, as well as Drew Barrymore, Charlton Heston and Todd Rundgren.
