Like most teen girls her age, Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) longs to sing and dance on Baltimore’s hottest daytime television network — but she doesn’t quite fit the bill according to the station’s producers who are dead set on preserving a slim white American identity. Determined to shepard her community into the new age, Tracy sweeps audiences off of their feet and uses her new found fame to stand in solidarity with her Black peers, and everyone else who deviates from the status quo. With an unforgettable performance from John Travolta as Tracy’s borderline agoraphobic mom, Edna Turnblad, HAIRSPRAY boldly dreams of a world where equality reigns supreme, and love is forever triumphant.
